Obtaining a Victorian Drivers License (L's to P)

Part 1: LEARNER'S PERMIT

Obtaining a Victorian Drivers License is in 3 parts; by firstly obtaining a Learner's Permit which you must be at least 16 years old.

The Learners Permit consists of 32 questions and you must obtain a score of 78% or higher to pass, than the following process will apply:

Learner Drivers under 21 years old who obtained their Learner's Permit after the 1st of July 2007 must have at least 120 hours of supervised driving (with at least 10 hours in the dark) and are required to produce a Log Book signed by the supervising driver(s). They must hold their Learners Permit for at least 12 months prior to taking the drive test.

Learner Drivers over 21 years old but under 25 years old must hold their
Learners Permit for at least 6 months prior to taking the drive test.

Learner Drivers over 25 years old must hold their Learners Permit for at least 3 months prior to taking the drive test.

Part 2: HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST

Prior to taking the Drive Test you must pass the computerised Hazard Perception Test.

You must be at least 17 years old and 11 months to take the test.

During the test you will watch 28 short videos based on a driver's point-of-view. For each video you must indicate when you would react if you were the driver (e.g. slowing, stopping) and your responses will be assessed.

You must obtain a score of 54% or higher to pass.

Part 3: THE DRIVE TEST

Before you undertake the on-road assessment the VicRoads License Testing Officer (LTO) will ask you to perform a pre-drive safety check. You must know where these controls are and know how to use them.

  • Indicators
  • Brake lights
  • Headlights (low and high beam)
  • Hazard lights
  • Horn
  • Windscreen washers and wipers
  • Windscreen demister
  • Rear window demister
  • Identify the handbrake

The Drive Test consists of 2 parts and you must pass Part 1 before you can proceed to Part 2. At the end of Part 1 your progress will be reviewed and if you have attained sufficient points you will progress to Part 2.

A minimum of 17 tasks will be assessed,  at least 5 of the possible 7 tasks in Part 1 (including the reverse park or three-point turn, at least two lane changes and one straight drive). Part 1 takes about 10 minutes and involves driving tasks in less challenging traffic conditions (low to medium traffic), while Part 2 takes about 20 minutes and involves day-to-day driving tasks in more challenging traffic conditions (medium to heavy traffic).

The following are test assessment items:

  • Car Control ( speeding up and slowing down smoothly)
  • Observation (checking mirrors, head checks)
  • Signalling (before starting to move, turning, changing lanes, diverging, stopping, turning at a roundabout)
  • Gap Selection (can identify a safe gap)
  • Speed Choice (stay within the speed limit- without exceeding it for 5 continuous seconds or by 5 km/hour or more for any period, adjusting speed to conditions)
  • Following Distance ( 2 seconds, 3 seconds in poor conditions, resume a suitable distance after changing lanes)
  • Lateral Position (when turning left or right from an appropriate lane, when going straight through an intersection not selecting a turning lane, not travel in a bicycle lane, maintain a clearance of 1.2 m from parked vehicles and a safe clearance from vehicles travelling in other lanes)
  • Parking (between 2 – 4 movements in 2 minutes, finish 300 mm from the kerb, 1-2 m from the car in front and not reverse more than 7 m from the car in front.  Not mount the kerb. Look through the rear window prior to reversing. Signal for at least 5 seconds prior to leaving the kerb)

At the end to be awarded a Victorian Driver License you must have attained sufficient points and have made no more than 2 Critical Errors in both parts of the test, (maximum of one in Part 1).

If at the time of the test you are under 21 years old you will be awarded a P1 Probationary License, however if you are over 21 years old you will skip P1 and go straight on to a P2 Probationary License.
